Trapunto involves outlining a design on a quilt top or block, with an extra layer of batting underneath, and then stuffing or padding the desired areas from the underside, creating a raised, three-dimensional effect. In this class, you will learn how the technique of trapunto is achieved in machine embroidery. We will discuss best practices including: the history of trapunto, stabilizers, proper hooping methods, registration, digitizing principles for trapunto effects, applique techniques, floating fabrics, layering batting and fabrics correctly in the hoop, and how to apply this effect to your projects. We will embroider three designs (Sewing Machine, Pumpkin, and USA Flag) in class demonstrating the technique of trapunto.
**You do NOT need a machine to take this course. However, we will be creating 3 trapunto blocks in class. You are allowed to register and watch others participate if you do not want to bring your machine. Everyone is required to purchase a kit (includes all fabrics and files), which you can make at home at a later time.**
Preferred hoop size: 5″x7″ or larger (*4”x4” is acceptable; designs will be smaller)
